One of the things that people comment on is that I’m always warm. This isn’t something that I’m particularly interested in, I just don’t like hot weather very much as a result, but I do get a lot of “where’s your coat? It’s freezing!” type comments.

High core temperature and high calorie demand body type over here. Whatever.

The point right now is that I don’t tend to feel cold inside. I can be aware that it’s cold and I can need to wrap up or need the heating on but I don’t really feel it in my bones. This means that when my temperature drops, which it occasionally does, I have no idea how to cope.

I don’t mean that I get upset or anything but rather I just have no idea what to do. I don’t even know how cold I really am because it’s probably just that I’ve dropped slightly in temperature because I’m run down or something and some kind of survival thing would kick in if needed.

I am cold today. I need something to eat. I thought to buy pizza the other day and, being cold and tired, I thought that would be a good idea. While I got it out of the freezer I noticed that I had some Cornettos in there. I put the pizza in the oven and I have just realised that I was finishing off a Cornetto.

I am so used to being able to eat ice cream whatever the situation I just did it on autopilot while waiting for my pizza to cook and then realised that I was getting colder.

I’m going to have a very early night. And I am not going to eat any more ice cream this evening.

You won’t be stressing this summer if you’re sipping on this tasty glass of general badassery. The antioxidant loaded in theses blackberries will make sure free radicals aren’t fucking up your day. And the bourbon? YOU EARNED THAT SHIT.

BLACKBERRY BOURBON FIZZ

5 blackberries

5 ice cubes

1 shot of bourbon

¾ cup cold ginger ale (none of that high fructose corn syrup, aspartame nonsense either. Get good shit that has fucking ginger root as an ingredient)

¼ cup cold club soda (optional)

Put the blackberries in the bottom of a tall glass and mash them around with a spoon. Keep some big chunks because it looks cool. Add the ice and then the bourbon, ginger ale, and club soda. I like adding club soda because it keeps it tasting refreshing as fuck but you can save some cash and just add more ginger ale. Garnish with fresh basil if you are trying to impress somebody.

Serves 1 but invite a fucking friend, no need to drink alone

OMG they look like fish eyeballs! But they’re not.
OMG the colouring is made from crushed beetles! Yes, like a lot of red food colouring and it’s perfectly safe. In fact one of the main problems that we have in the world is that people are squeamish about eating insects which are a very good source of energy and this kind of thing doesn’t help.
OMG the jars are gryrating! That would be because they’re being packed and they’d like them to settle. It’s a perfectly normal packing process.

I’m not saying that they’re great for you, and I’m not saying that corn syrup (and particularly high fructose corn syrup) is a great idea, however, if you eat a couple of these IT DOESN’T FUCKING MATTER.

Examining Adoption Ethics: Part One:

We can begin here: Sometimes when you wave a $100 in front of someone, he or she will do anything to get it, even something knowingly harmful. Let’s stipulate that rich Americans flooding impoverished countries with millions of dollars to adopt its children will absolutely garner attention. Money has always been a magnet for corruption. While there are obviously lots of true orphans, without question, that much cash flow will generate some “created orphans” to satisfy demand, especially for babies.

Now three years after our first steps, I’m connected to people living in all sorts of impoverished countries, and the word on the street is not good. There is the Christian adoption narrative we use over here, including inflated statistics, words like rescue and saving, and plenty of emotional ammunition (me = guilty), then there is the in-country story, which is something altogether different.

I so want this to not be true, but I keep hearing it over and over in Ethiopia, Haiti, Uganda, Congo, everywhere. The missionaries and locals are saying something very disturbing: so often vulnerable birth moms are coerced and misled, families are manipulated and deceived, children are flat out bought. International adoption is Big Business. I’ve read emails describing orphanage directors who paid $20 for birth certificates and $75 to take a baby right out of his mother’s hands. Paperwork is falsified and birth families are told their children are going to school, to triage while they stabilize, to receive health care then return home.

There are very real orphans all over the earth, but most of us don’t pursue the kids there are; we pursue the kids we want, and these countries know the score. Older kids stay on waiting children lists, while the baby line is hundreds deep. It doesn’t take long for opportunists to figure this out.
